March 31, 2023—On Wednesday, March 26, the Madoc Township PS Grade 4/5 class held the Baker Bunnies Bake Sale to raise money in support of Heart of Hastings Hospice.
Class teacher Angela Burr supported this student-led initiative by having students select a local charity to support, write persuasive letters to their families to request their assistance with providing baked goods for the bake sale and create the business model and advertisements for the day. As most students were unfamiliar with hospice, a representative from Heart of Hastings Hospice spoke to the class about the hospice and important services it provides to local families.
Student engaged in a variety of fund-raising activities to raise money for branded t-shirts, which they tie-dyed to add a splash of individuality. Students wrote and recorded advertisements, which were broadcast on school announcements to promote the event, and they created posters and decorated all of the treat boxes with their bunny branding.
This year, to complement the bake sale, the students also came up with the idea of a draw to win a fancy bunny cake as another revenue stream.
In addition to the bake sale event, the bunnies contact local businesses to sell an assortment treat baskets and cakes. Family volunteers packaged and delivered the baskets, spreading some sweetness to the Madoc community.
After the icing sugar settled, the final results for the day were $1505 raised from local business and friends donations and $1733 raised through bake sale proceeds from staff, students and community members.
Total funds raised for Heart of Hastings Hospice was $3238. Well done bunnies!
