These are highlights of the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board public meeting held June 22, 2026.

Affirmation of Traditional Lands

Shannon Binder, Trustee, Southeast Hastings, offered a Land Affirmation.

Presentation: Alternative Learning 

This presentation described the alternative learning environments available to students. Alternative Education is a compassionate pathway. It involves establishing a secure foundation first, then actively cultivating the confidence and readiness for students to successfully transition back to school.

The report provided updates from the OPSBA Board of Directors meeting on June 4 and the Annual Meeting on June 5, 2026.

Governance and Policy Committee: June 15, 2026

Board members approved revised Policy 21: Integrity and Accountability, and also approved the amended annual schedule of meeting dates for the 2026-2027 school year.

Physical Planning, Finance and Building Committee: May 25 and June 8, 2026

Board members approved various borrowing resolutions to meet current and upcoming operating and capital expenditures. The motion related to TriBoard Transportation was defeated.

Director Performance Appraisal Committee

Board members approved the 2025-2026 Director's Performance Appraisal and presented CEO MacIver with a management letter effective June 22, 2026.

Audit Committee: June 3, 2026

Board members approved the Audit Planning Report for the year ending August 31, 2026.

Student Voice

Highlights from this report included mention of student activities during the past month; the various opportunities to meet students throughout the district; and Audrey Maracle voted in as vice-president of the Indigenous committee of the Ontario Student Trustees' Association.

Chair's report and trustee sharing

The three student trustees were acknowledged for their service on the Board. Thomas Rice is graduating from Prince Edward Collegiate Institute and is leaving the Board. Audrey Maracle and Maria Nash are returning to the Board in September.

Other highlights from this report included an expression of gratitude to community partners and the media for helping to tell HPEDSB stories. Congratulations to employees who have/are retiring. Thank you to current staff who are making a difference in students' lives.

Trustees shared that they attended the Retirement Dinner, Adult Education graduation and the Centennial Secondary School graduation.  

Chief Executive Officer report

Highlights from this report included reference to new regulations and significant provincial education-related announcements. Mention was made of students who have achieved national, provincial and local recognition at skills competitions, Science fairs and financial scholarships for post-secondary studies. Expressed appreciation to the student trustees for their leadership and contributions to Board discussions.

Alternative and Continuing Education report

Alternative learning supports students who require a changed learning experience to access their schooling, those who are returning to learning after an extended absence, or students who have faced barriers to learning in the traditional learning structure. 

Alternative learning provides students with opportunities to find academic success at their own pace, in their home communities, while affording them the flexibility to engage in other responsibilities. Success looks different for all students and can be measured in different ways. Students will transition into Alternative learning and through their engagement, may return to their home school, or may take advantage of other specialized programming in HPE, move into Adult Education or be connected to one of our local employment partners.

Student Achievement Plan update

This report identified partner-informed recommendations for action for the three Student Achievement Plan pillars:

•  Achievement in core academic areas
• Preparation for future pathways
• Student engagement and well-being

This feedback is intended to support system design of actions and metrics, with specific emphasis on improving achievement outcomes for students with learning disabilities and students who self-identify as Indigenous.

Board members approved amendments to the Special Education Plan.

2026-2027 Budget report

Board members adopted the 2026-2027 budget estimates. Overall, projected Core Education Funding (Core Ed) revenues are increased to $234.1 million. The Responsive Education Program (REP) grants have yet to be released. Total revenue is $263.9 million. Total expenses of $264.9 million are shown in the draft budget. There is $1.0 million in costs described as unavailable for compliance which leads to a balanced budget for compliance of $0 for surplus/deficit.
