A message to families from Katherine MacIver, Director of Education

February 11, 2026

Dear HPEDSB Families,

It is with a heavy heart that we address the tragic events that occurred yesterday at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia. While this tragedy took place many kilometers away, the impact of such a senseless act of violence is felt by school communities across the country. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families, students, and staff of Tumbler Ridge. Flags at the Education Centre and Facility Services/ Maintenance buildings will be flown at half-mast through to February 17, 2026 in recognition.

In times like these, it is natural for children—and even adults—to feel a sense of anxiety or concern regarding school safety. We want to reassure you that the safety and well-being of our students and staff are at the core of everything we do at HPEDSB. We encourage you to check in with your children and have open conversations about their feelings.

If you find that your child is struggling to process recent events, or is feeling overwhelmed by the school year, please know that you are not alone. Support is available by contacting your child’s teacher or principal. If your child needs to speak with someone outside of school hours, or if you prefer an external resource, Kids Help Phone provides free, confidential, and anonymous support across Canada.

As we move forward into the second half of this school year, please continue to lead with kindness and look out for one another. Thank you for your ongoing partnership in your child's education and for being a vital part of the HPEDSB community.

Sincerely,

Katherine MacIver
Director of Education
