HPEDSB students excel at Special Olympics Provincial Championships and Leadership Summit
From May 26-28, 2026, student-athletes and leaders from HPEDSB traveled to Western University in London, Ontario, to participate in the Special Olympics Provincial School Championships and Youth Leadership Summit. Joining over 1,000 students from across the province, representatives from Centennial Secondary School, Central Hastings School and Trenton High School proudly showcased their athletic skills and dedication to inclusive programming.
Centennial Secondary School earns silver
Centennial Secondary School sent a dedicated team of ten student-athletes and leaders to the event. Competing in Unified Soccer, a format where athletes with and without disabilities play on the same team, the Chargers earned a well-deserved Silver Medal after playing eight games over two days of competition. This marks the third time in four years that CSS has brought home medals. Two CSS students also took part in the Youth Leadership Summit, connecting with peers from across the province and learning directly from Special Olympics athletes. Congratulations to the CSS team and their coaches: Vanessa Deming, Rebecca Delaney and Meghan Weinhold.
Central Hastings School takes home bronze
Central Hastings School was proudly represented by a team of seven students who competed in traditional floorball. Demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and improving with every game they played, the CHS team celebrated a major success by winning the Division 1 Bronze Medal.
Off the court, the CHS students loved the experience of living in residence. They also took advantage of the healthy schools initiatives at the event, where they received foot assessments, advice on proper footwear, dental checks, and tips for healthy teeth.
Trenton High School leaders plan for an inclusive future
THS was strongly represented at the Youth Leadership Summit by Sue Mitten. Returning with fresh inspiration, the THS team is already planning to work alongside CIP and LSP students to promote future Special Olympics events within the school and community. They will be debriefing with the SAA, Student Council and teacher lead Melissa Forge to expand inclusive practices within school intramurals, the athletic banquet and "Athlete of the Month" recognitions. Looking ahead, THS has set a goal to host a Special Olympics event next year and support their athletes in advancing to the provincial competition in Orillia in May 2027.
