Community Drop-Ins: 2023 Long-term Capital and Accommodation Plan review
Posted on 05/18/2023

Updated May 29, 2023

May 18, 2023—The public is invited to Community Drop-ins hosted by Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board (HPEDSB).

What’s this about?

Some schools in specific areas of HPEDSB are experiencing enrolment pressures. Due to a variety of factors, only certain options are available to HPEDSB to address accommodation pressures. Much of the enrolment increase is occurring in the Belleville to Trenton corridor, with accommodation pressures specifically in the northeastern portion of Belleville and the Bayside area.

What to expect at the Community Drop-ins

The Community Drops-ins are an opportunity for the public to tell us more.

Even though the Long-term Capital and Accommodation Plan (LTCAP) identifies possible accommodation options, HPEDSB is seeking input from all stakeholders regarding their ideas for how to best address the enrolment pressures. HPEDSB wants to hear new ideas from the community that haven’t already been considered.

Through displays posted around the room, HPEDSB will share information about the challenges facing some schools. School communities and the public are invited to offer new ideas and suggestions that HPEDSB has not already considered.

If you cannot make it in person, please see below for digital versions of the materials that are on display from May 29-31.

Who: Open to the public, anyone is welcome to tour the displays.

Quick facts

  • The (LTCAP) is a reference and planning document that uses recent demographic information and enrolment projections to provide an overview of student enrolment, school data, programs offered and more.
  • In January 2023, the LTCAP, prepared in collaboration with Watson & Associates Economists Ltd., was updated to reflect the most recent demographic information and enrolment projections.
  • Enrolment at elementary schools (Kindergarten to Grade 8) is projected to increase to approximately 11,515 students by 2031-2032, representing an 8% increase from the existing 2022-2023 enrolment.
  • Enrolment at secondary schools (Grade 9 to 12) is projected to increase to approximately 5,135 students by 2031-2032, representing 11% change from the existing 2022-2023 enrolment.

Next steps

HPEDSB will gather the ideas shared at the Community Drop-ins and share the feedback by the end of June. Over the summer, staff will review and analyze the data. In September/October, HPEDSB will host public meetings and focus groups, with the goal of making a decision by the end of 2023. Transition planning is proposed to begin in 2024.
